Beyond These Borders

Durmitor National Park in northwestern Montenegro offers beautiful views and mountainous hikes that are easily accessible even without a car. The small town of Žabljak is the perfect place to stay during your visit since it is just a short walk from the national park. We spent 5 days in the area enjoying the mountains, the trees, and the beautiful lake in Durmitor National Park. Our visit was during the month of June 2025. Getting to Žabljak A bus ride of just over 2.5 hours transferred us from Podgorica to the small town of Žabljak. The mountain views from the bus window got better and better as we neared the town. Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro.  When first hearing this, I assumed there would be lots to do and see in the city.  I soon learned that people joke that it is the most boring capital city in Europe.  While it isn't a tourist hot-spot, we still found it worthwhile to visit during our time in Montenegro. We went through Podgorica twice while traveling through Montenegro. First as a multi-day stop-over on our journey from Kotor to Durmitor National Park. After our time in Durmitor National Park we took the bus back to Podgorica and from there we traveled up out of Montenegro into Serbia by train. Kotor is nestled between dramatic mountains and the interior of Kotor Bay.  Here you will find a medieval Old Town, a sparkling clear bay, and tons of friendly felines.  I visited this timeless town twice this year.  The first time just for 5 hours on the last day of January during a cruise and the second time for a week during the hot days of early June. Herceg Novi is a charming small town along the Adriatic coast just inside the entrance to the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro.
