Belize: Cave tubing in San Ignacio and taking it too slow in Caye Caulker

March 26, 2024 by Kameri Leave a Comment

On this short trip to Belize, we only spent 2 nights in San Ignacio and then headed to the island of Caye Caulker for 5 nights. In retrospect, 5 nights on Caye Caulker was far too many and we wish we had spent more time in San Ignacio. San Ignacio After leaving Tikal and riding in a local bus to the border with Belize, we passed through immigration and grabbed a taxi to the nearby town of San Ignacio. We only booked two nights in San Ignacio, so we had to pick only one activity while in …

48 Hours in Tikal, Guatemala

February 20, 2024 by Kameri Leave a Comment

Nestled in the jungle of northern Guatemala, hide the remains of one of the largest Mayan civilizations ever to exist. Tikal was inhabited from the 6th century BCE to the 10th Century CE. After it was abandoned, the jungle swallowed up this great city. Steep, awe-inspiring, limestone temples that have been uncovered and reconstructed rise up from the green vegetation. Many more temples are still hidden under the jungle. We spent a little under 48 hours in Tikal National …

Independence Day on the Bay Islands of Honduras

November 17, 2018 by Kameri Leave a Comment

Our final stops exploring Honduras were the Bay Islands over Independence Day.  There are 3 islands.  Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja.  We made it to Utila and then Roatan but missed out on Guanaja. Utila Utila is a small community island considered cheaper than Roatan.  There is one Main Street with restaurants, shops, and dive shops along it.  Travelers primarily visit Utila to dive the reef around it. We really wanted to see whale sharks.  We booked a tour to look for them, hoping to …

Lake Yojoa, Honduras: Craft Beer, Kayaking, and Hiking Behind a Waterfall

October 28, 2018 by Kameri Leave a Comment

After a great stay in Copan de Ruinas, we traveled for 8 hours to Lake Yojoa.  The roads were filled with red tuk tuks and pickup trucks who frequently honk as a "hello" to their friends.  We drove by colorful houses of blue, green, yellow, red and orange.  Outside these homes, clothes were drying on lines in the sun.  Children were mostly clothed in school uniforms.  Stray dogs ran across the streets and small parades were gathering to celebrate the upcoming …

Copan Ruins, Macaws, and Luna Jaguar Spa

October 11, 2018 by Kameri 2 Comments

We flew into Honduras and took a bus to the region of Copan where we saw the Maya ruins, Macaws, and an incredible hot springs spa. After 3 flights we finally landed in San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in Honduras.  Half an hour in a taxi ($15) got us to the main bus station where we boarded our bus to Copan Ruinas with Casasola for 140 limperas each ($6). The drive was beautiful with deep green hills surrounding us.  Sadly, trash covered the ditches and riverbanks surrounding …
